Hi, I’m Bek, the person behind Vail Knox.
I’m an artist, maker and witch living in the Adelaide Hills in a wood cottage with chickens, parrots, cats, dogs, quals and a rogue pigeon. I paint, draw, carve lino and make things from paper, and I’m usually learning how to make something new.
Vail Knox came from wanting one place for all of that.
I’ve been making things for as long as I can remember, although what I’m making tends to change depending on what I’m interested in at the time. At the moment that includes watercolour, painting, lino printing, cards, stickers and other small pieces of art. I’m also interested in bookbinding, so there’s a reasonable chance books will find their way in here eventually too.
I don't want Vail Knox to be built around one particular type of art. I like being able to follow an idea, try something, get better at it and see where it goes.
The same applies to the subjects I make art about. I love flowers and plants, so you'll see plenty of those. Witchcraft, folklore and tarot turn up too. Sometimes those worlds overlap and sometimes I just paint something because I felt like painting it.
Witchcraft isn't something I added to Vail Knox because it makes a good aesthetic. It's part of my life and something I've been practicing for 30 years
I'm interested in tarot, spells, plants, folklore, symbolism and the history behind different practices. I'm also naturally curious and fairly questioning, so my relationship with witchcraft isn't particularly serious or solemn.
There is plenty of room here for believing in a little magic while also being able to laugh about it.
That's probably a good description of Vail Knox generally.
It's a place for me to make art, experiment with ideas and turn some of those things into pieces you can have in your own home, stick on your laptop, put inside a book or give to someone else.
Everything here starts with something I genuinely wanted to make.
I hope you find something you genuinely want to keep.
